Soulful songwriting and sultry vocals rise and dip through the convoluted path of resilience, motherhood, aging and loss.
I wrote the 5 songs for "This Much I Know" between the time my second son was born in 2015, up until the foggy weeks after my mother died in 2017. Although these are not the only songs I wrote during that time, they have been the most honest about my experience as a mother, woman and daughter. The title track "This Much I Know" talks about having your roots ripped out and feeling completely ungrounded, yet still trying to find beauty and certainty in the natural cycles of the world, despite on-going uncertainty. "Grey" revolves around the toughness and power that a woman accumulates with age; telling the truth faster - and not letting others waste your time or energy. "The Blue Jay" is a song I wrote a few days after my mother died, where I waited for a sign from the other side that she had moved on, based on a series of dreams I had about blue jays leading up to her death. "Mommy" is a quirky song about the constant ambivalence and tenderness experienced when mothering small children, and the tremendous shift in identity that occurs when a person becomes a mother. Lastly, "A Thing With Wings" centers on the idea of trying to listen to the highest self and be spiritually lead, while still keeping one's feet on the ground, and the struggle to stay present.
